What is metamodernism in art?

Metamodernism in art subscribes to the idea of a ‘meta-narrative’ or 'story of a story' whilst using the tactics and tools of Postmodernism and new Technology. Metamodernist art aims to experiment and incite discussion about returning to a ‘meta-narrative’.

Description

This metamodernism painting shows a close-up of a small, white pitcher filled with a bright red apple. The pitcher is made of black ceramic, and has a white circle painted on its side. The apple appears to be freshly picked, and has a crisp, colorful skin. The pitcher is sitting on a white plate, probably a saucer, that has a light green pattern around its edges. In the background, a large couch can be seen, covered in a mauve fabric. The dark brown wooden legs of the couch contrast with the white walls of the room. The image has a still-life quality to it, with the pitcher and apple seeming to be carefully arranged for the photograph.
