What is metamodernism in art?

Metamodernism in art subscribes to the idea of a ‘meta-narrative’ or 'story of a story' whilst using the tactics and tools of Postmodernism and new Technology. Metamodernist art aims to experiment and incite discussion about returning to a ‘meta-narrative’.

Description

This Metamodernist painting depicts a bowl with a white ball inside of it, resting atop a green and brown surface. The bowl is composed of ceramic and is surrounded by a variety of tableware, which has a yellow banana peel at the center. The painting is close up, so it is possible to make out the intricate details of the bowl, such as the texture of the ceramic and the texture of the white ball. The colors used in the painting are mostly black, white, yellow, green, and brown. This painting could be described as a still-life, as it captures a moment in time with a variety of objects that evoke a sense of domesticity. The painting captures a moment of calm and peace, perhaps signaling a pause in the busyness of life. The bowl and its contents can be seen as a symbol of the cycle of life, with the white ball being a representation of potential metamodernism.
