What is metamodernism in art?

Metamodernism in art subscribes to the idea of a ‘meta-narrative’ or 'story of a story' whilst using the tactics and tools of Postmodernism and new Technology. Metamodernist art aims to experiment and incite discussion about returning to a ‘meta-narrative’.

Description

This metamodern painting is of a young woman, with her head slightly tilted to the side. She is wearing a white shirt, which is the focal point of the painting, and has a bright yellow background. Her facial expression is neutral and her eyes are slightly open. There is a box in the foreground of the painting, which is a dark color with a light blue outline. The painting is abstract in nature, with shapes and colors used to create an overall effect. The dominant colors in the painting are grey, yellow and blue, with the yellow being the most prominent. This painting is a great example of a metamodernist artwork, with the use of different colors and shapes creating a mesmerizing effect.
