What is metamodernism in art?

Metamodernism in art subscribes to the idea of a ‘meta-narrative’ or 'story of a story' whilst using the tactics and tools of Postmodernism and new Technology. Metamodernist art aims to experiment and incite discussion about returning to a ‘meta-narrative’.

Description

This metamodernistic artwork shows a man wearing a black and white face paint and a red and white hat. His facial features are visible, with his eyes wide open and mouth slightly agape. He has white face paint covering the majority of his face, with a black outline around his eyes and nose. His red and white hat is also visible, with a wide brim and a red band around it. He appears to be in a theatrical setting, as evidenced by the bright colors and theatrical makeup. The man is looking directly at the camera, with a slightly serious expression. The background is mostly black, with a few white specks visible. Overall, the artwork conveys a sense of theatricality and playfulness.
