What is metamodernism in art?

Metamodernism in art subscribes to the idea of a ‘meta-narrative’ or 'story of a story' whilst using the tactics and tools of Postmodernism and new Technology. Metamodernist art aims to experiment and incite discussion about returning to a ‘meta-narrative’.

Description

In this metamodernistic artwork, we can see a woman sitting in a pool of water, with her arms outstretched and her head tilted back. She is wearing a patterned mask on her face, and a pair of sunglasses rests atop her head. Behind her is a tall, thin red and teal pole, with a yellow top. The color palette of this image is primarily red, yellow, teal, and blue. The woman in the picture appears to be in deep concentration, relaxed and content. The shallow water that she is sitting in gives the impression that she is submerged, with her arms providing buoyancy as she is held afloat. Her sunglasses suggest that the sun is shining brightly, and the colors of the pole indicate that this image may have been taken outdoors. The image has a cartoon-like quality to it, with the simplistic and stylized shapes and colors. The lines are smooth and clean, and the colors are bright and vivid. The painting is metamodern in nature.
